Promotion and Retention

A child under age six (6) who is enrolled in kindergarten will be considered of compulsory school age and therefore must abide by the guidelines outlined by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). In addition to the above general admissions guidelines, incoming Kindergarten students must comply with the below requirements:

  1. Be five (5) years of age on or before September 30th of the year in which he/she applies for entrance.

  2. Submit an annual physical report that was completed no more than twelve (12) months prior to the first day of matriculation.

  3. Submit evidence of matriculation at another public or private school in which the student was enrolled as a kindergartener, if the child is below the age or five (5) years of age on or before September 30th of the year in which he/she applies for entrance.

  4. Be registered by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). Guardians must present proper certification of legal guardianship and, when applicable, a parent must provide a copy of any custody arrangements. If a birth certificate is not provided, the parent must complete Form 5111 F3 and submit with the specified documentary evidence. If the courts have established custody, a copy of the court order must be provided.

Third Grade Guarantee

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) mandates that schools identify students in kindergarten through third grade who are not reading at grade level. At UCS we use MAP scores to help identify those students and help them work up to grade level by the time they take the Third Grade Guarantee. This is a state test that students must take at the end of third grade, and is designed to catch students who are not at reading level, before the gaps in their reading abilities create larger gaps in their ability to perform in other subject areas. For this reason, if a student does not pass the Third Grade Guarantee, the state mandates that they complete a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan (RIMP), (Ohio Revised Code 3313.608), which includes intensive one on one tutoring throughout the school day by a reading specialist. Since UCS does not currently have the resources to carry out a mandatory RIMP, students who do not pass the Third Grade Guarantee will not be able to continue with UCS during fourth grade.
For more details about the Third Grade Guarantee, please visit their page on the Ohio Department of Education website here.

Student Withdrawal

Parents who wish to withdraw their child/ren from the school must give immediate written notification. Parents are responsible for payment of tuition fees. All records will be released upon settlement of any outstanding financial obligations.
